Fair Trade Week Monday 20th to Friday 24th April 2015

As part of our "Global Awareness" Section under our Eco Schools banner, the Green Committee is focusing a specific week on Fair Trade in 2015.

"Fair trade means that the producer receives a guaranteed and fair price for their product regardless of the price on the world market. This means their quality of life should improve, as well as the long-term prospects for their children."

Over the course of the week commencing 20th April 2015 we will be running a series of Fair Trade Events across both the senior and prep school.

This will include a Fair Trade Quiz in tutor periods (with prizes!), Assemblies and a Fair Trade stall on Wednesday 22nd April 2015!

Many thanks for your support

Mrs Alexander, Dr Clow and Mrs Afford

Renewing our Green Flag Status!

Welcome to the Green Committee pages for
The Pocklington School Foundation.

In 2015 we are working towards renewing our Green Flag status that we were proud to be awarded in 2013.

As part of this award we must continue to demonstrate that we are an evolving Eco-School and progressing the Foundation (both Prep and Main School) in its commitment to the Environment.

After a hugely successful 2014 we hope to build on the excellent work the two schools have done.

We are focusing our attention  on a number of areas that includes Animal and Plant conservation and looking at ways the school can incorporate Fair Trade into its community.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the committee over the last 12 months and we look forward to a new year of new ideas and green initiatives.

2nd Year Green Day 17th June 2014

The Green Committee ran their bi-annual off timetable “Green Day” for  2nd year pupils in mid June 2014.
Thankfully although the sun didn’t shine, the rain held off and a great many of the activities were able to run outside. The 2nd years all thoroughly enjoyed themselves – “it was awesome!” was the response of 2 of the girls when asked about their day.
The school was alight with Green Activities from Miss Boiangiu’s Falling Garden which made use of plastic carrier bags and containers, to Mrs Bond’ recycled poems using old newspapers (Wayne Rooney did not come off well!)
Mr Kettlewell used the latest Apple Technology to produce some fantastic Green Songs (raps and tearjerkers!), Mrs Alexander calculated pupil’s carbon footprint and encouraged a “walk to school” and “Switch off Charging Gadgets” resolution.
Dr Clow produced a miniature eco system which can still be seen in the Biology department, Mr Andrews undertook a superb bird ringing and vast bug count during the day (including Tony the Toad!) Finally, Miss Ellis and her groups did some really interesting research on Wind Turbines and Solar Panels and the possible locations and use on the school site which we hope to research further.
We ended the day with a group feedback, looking at all the inspiring activities we had encountered through the day.
Thanks to all the 2nd years for getting involved in all the activities and to all the staff involved in this exciting day!

A Summer Update from the Green Committee

Welcome to the summer term from the Green Committee!

We achieved a great deal over the Lent Term that continues to strengthen our Green Commitment to the school foundation at both Pocklington and Lyndhurst
1)      BAGS FOR SCIENCE
Dr Clow coordinated a “Bags for Science” scheme where (across the foundation) we generated 296KG of recycled shoes and clothes from kind donations from staff, pupils and parents. This converted into 12000 points which will be used to purchase
A “Mud Clock”
A selection of new resources for Pocklington Junior Science and Lyndhurst Science Department
2)     FOOD FOOTPRINT
A recent “Food Survey” for 1st to 5th years and Lyndhurst showed a great many of our families are composting and very aware of the food miles on their produce and do, where possible, buy local.
We are committed to encouraging our pupils (and staff) to eat “7 a day” portions of fruit and vegetables through the excellent food served in our dining hall.
3)     2ND YEAR GREEN DAY
On Tuesday 17th June, all the 2nd year ICT pupils will be undertaking an exciting “off timetable Green Day” to take part in activities focused around eco awareness. There will also be a 2nd year GREEN non-uniform day (details to follow to parents).
4)     WWF SPONSORED ANIMAL
Our sponsored Elephant “Dumbo” is doing well. We get regular updates from the WWF on how our sponsorship is being spent.

Best Wishes
Mrs Alexander, Dr Clow and the Green Committee
